Is Love Hurried?
The Urge to Hurry & Be Productive
This past week, I have been dealing with some health concerns. Typically, when health issues arise in my life, my goal has been to hurry and fix them so that I can be “productive” again. And if I cannot fix them, then my goal is to hurry up and be “productive,” whether that means taking pain medicine or just ignoring the pain so that I can mask it long enough to work my typical 10-hour days and be ready to be an A+ mom when my kids and husband come home. Ultimately, the pattern has been to hurry up and be productive. If healing comes in that rush, then great, but healing is not required.
I have noticed that in my rush to be productive, I find myself upset with God. God, why don’t you just heal me quickly so that I can get back to being productive? Where are you? Why aren’t you fixing this now? I don’t have time to wait.
God’s Presence in The Slow
I’ve been looking for God in my hurried efforts, and the Holy Spirit revealed that although God is present, He is inviting me to rest instead of supporting my drive for constant productivity. My desire to hurry is shaped by society, but God is drawing me to a restorative pace. The main message is that God’s presence is found in rest, not in rushing.
We often expect God to answer us on our terms and timetable, but God does not cater to our impulses for speed. Instead, He remains consistent with His character and calls us to slow down. Our fast pace is not aligned with true love or wellness. The key message is that God’s love is found in slowing down, not in hurrying to keep up with unhealthy expectations.
This is the danger behind a theology that teaches that God is always in agreement with our desires. When we think God wants to meet our every desire, we miss the fact that sometimes God is actually drawing us away from our desires because they are not healthy. We want God’s love to be hurried, but God’s love is patient and not in a rush. God’s love is more concerned about our wellness and our wholeness as opposed to our productivity.
Finding God in A New Rhythm
Maybe we struggle to find God because we look for Him in our busy routines, but He invites us to a slower rhythm. God does not adjust His pace to ours; instead, He calls us to His unhurried pace, where we find lasting rest. The central idea: finding God may require us to slow down and align with His rhythm.
Scripture Meditation:
Read this scripture today 3 times while taking slow, deep breaths.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres”
1 Corinthians 13: 4-7
Reflection Questions:
- What stands out to you as you meditate on this scripture today?
- Have you been looking for God to match your pace or the pace that society has told you to go?
- Have you noticed God has been leading you to a slower rhythm? If so, are you resisting that rhythm?
- What would your life look like if you followed the rhythm of a loving God instead of the rhythm of culture/society?
My new book, God, Where Are You?, takes you on a journey, but the truth about this journey is that you will have to lay down some of the ways you are expecting to see God in order to truly see the beauty in how He is showing up in your life. You can download the 1st chapter FREE here:
